Nanoparticle-based origami biosensors

Researchers from the Multidisciplinary Sepsis Group have pioneered a new method for modifying paper strips with antibody-decorated nanoparticles (patent application P201930784). This method has been used to develop origami biosensors, which are activated by folding the paper substrate. This transfers nanoparticles to the detection area, where they generate colored spots that indicate that the patient has an infection. The resulting diagnostic tests are inexpensive, rapid and only require a smartphone to quantify signals, which makes them ideal for their implementation in health care.
